Have you heard of anyone, kid or adult, who didn’t like Disney/Pixar’s newest blockbuster film, Coco? Not likely. And if your daughter goes one step further than “liking” into full-on “loving” mode, then you’ll give her an extra special birthday party by following our tips and tricks for a Coco themed party.
If you have any other festive holiday parties coming up, most of the tips will work for any themed occasion—especially for a Day of the Dead party, which is the basis for the film’s story. Plus, since many little girls’ parties this year might go with more traditionally “girly” themes, you’ll score points for originality and creativity.
1. Make a Big Impression With a Small Budget
You can get brightly dyed paper streamers at any party supply store for just a few bucks. Traditional Day of the Dead colors include purple, white, orange, red, yellow, and of course pink, which represents celebration. Twist and hang streamers using these colors around the party area, and consider hanging several strips of billowing streamers from the top of the front door, so guests walk through a festive threshold into the world of Coco.
2. Create a Traditional Altar
Let the centerpiece of any gathering, the food table, be one of the most beautiful things at the party, as well as the tastiest. Every Day of the Dead party should have an ofrenda, which is literally an altar to those we’d like to honor. Include fruit, more streamers, party favors, and lots of flowers (marigolds are most common for this purpose).
3. Sugar Skulls for a Sweet Treat That’s Also Artistic
You can definitely find traditional Day of the Dead sugar skulls (which yes, are edible) online, but with a little extra time and creativity, you can make your own. Use them to decorate your “ofrenda,” or as place markers, if you’re having a sit-down meal. If you decide to accept this challenge, here’s a great recipe.
4. Easy DIY Face Painting
Allow guests to transform into one of the not-so-living characters in the movie by creating personalized (and very simple) skull makeup looks on each guest who wants one. All you have to do is use a disposable makeup sponge to create a white base with face paint, then draw on eye sockets, cheekbones, and a wide toothy smile with a black face paint crayon.
5. Make Memories with a Temporary Tattoo Station
Every kid loves temporary tattoos. And a temporary tattoo station of pre-packaged Townleygirl bracelet, necklace, anklet, and ring tattoos from the movie Coco will be a big hit for small bucks. Snag a few sheets of wrap-around Coco temporary tattoos for only $3.99 for a page of ten.
6. Spoil the Birthday Girl
If you’ re holding your Coco party in honor of your favorite little girl’s birthday, be sure to surprise her at gift time with everything she needs to do a complete Coco themed mani-pedi. The Coco Nail set comes with two cool colors and a purple skeleton carrying case. And for mess-free nail art fun, include the Coco press-on nail art wheel.
