3 Tips for Decluttering Your Daughter's Accessories and Toys This January
Decluttering! Some people wait until the frost has melted off the window panes before digging into spring cleaning, and some of us get the clean-up bug along with that first rush of New Year’s resolution motivation. Here are our top tips for decluttering hair accessories, play makeup, and small toys in 2018.
1. Let it Go
Take a piece of advice from your daughter’s favorite ice princess and whittle down her collections into stuff she uses and wants to keep for a good reason. And no, a tendency toward hoarding isn’t a good reason. First, check expiration dates on any consumables, like nail polish or lip balm, or other cosmetics, and toss anything that’s past its prime. That’s an easy, sentiment-free way to start the culling process.
Next, set aside any items your kiddies haven’t used in longer than six months. The exception to that rule is holiday-themed stuff that only makes sense once per year. If your daughter is having trouble letting things go, remind her that other kids will get to enjoy them if she donates them, not to mention, getting rid of her older toys makes room for future ones.
2. Categorize, Categorize, Categorize
The best way to stay organized and able to find something when you need it is by choosing a categorization system and sticking to it. Here are some ideas: set up clear or pretty storage bins by categories like school hair accessories, play and dress-up hair accessories, mani-pedi supplies, lip stuff and glitter sprays, etc. Adding pictures to the labels helps your child get in on the sorting game (if she’s still too young to know how to read yet). You can never start too early with teaching organizational habits. Decluttering will become much easier in the future if you start the process early on!
You could also choose to keep play sets together in their original presentation, especially if they came with carrying cases, like Townleygirl’s Emoji Nail Polish Set with carrying case. You could also choose to organize by theme, or character, if your daughter has twin obsessions with Beauty and the Beast, as well as Trolls, for instance. Lastly, for a Pinterest-worthy look, you can use clear bins to separate bits and bobs by color. The rainbow storage containers that result are a cool look.
3. Repurpose Containers in Fun New Ways
One of our favorite kinds of cute and reusable containers to repurpose are our super-popular Townleygirl Train Cases (like this one featuring Sofia the First) that have been difficult to keep in stock in the past year. Beyond that obvious starting point, the incredible bounty of ingenious storage hacks available on the internet these days could easily spark an organization obsession. Here are some of our most relevant favorites:
- Use an empty ice cube tray to organize tiny items and elastics
- Use a tie hanger to keep tiaras, necklaces, and jewelry from tangling
- Use a spice rack to line up bottles of nail polish
- Use a clear hanging shoe rack to stash small toys and accessories where you can see them
No matter your system now’s the time to for decluttering in 2018!
