4 Tips for Dealing with Your Daughter's Unruly Hair
Does your daughter have wild, unruly hair that resists every attempt to control it? Whether your daughter has a mane of crazy curls, super straight hair with no body, or she’s a girl with frizzy hair that defies all products, flawless hair is attainable! Straight hair, curly hair, wavy hair, natural hair, relaxed hair, frizzy hair…you name it. No matter what type of hair your girl has, if it seems like nothing you do tames her mane, we have some advice. Here are a few of our favorite stylist, mom, and kid-approved tips for taming and managing your little girl’s unruly hair.
1. You could be washing too often
Are you having your daughter suds up her hair every single day? Experts say that may be too much. Every child is different, according to their hair type, age, and other factors, but according to the experts, your kid under 12 should be shampooing between once every other day, all the way up to every seven or 10 days. Oily, straight hair, for example, needs to be washed more often. On the other hand, dry or very curly hair is less likely to need washing frequently. A good way to tell is to check the condition of her scalp. Is it dry? Flaky? You may need to wash less often.
2. Try some innovative products
Finding the right product can change an unruly head of hair to a beautiful mane. If what you’re using isn’t working, try a different children’s hair product. Instead of over-washing, try spritzing a bit of dry shampoo around her ends and tousling carefully. And if her wild curls bunch up and tangle in what seems like ten minutes, try spraying a gentle leave-in conditioner and working it through with your fingers or a wide tooth comb.
3. Try not to brush dry, curly hair
Anyone with curly hair knows that even when your curls are looking pristine, if you run a brush through a dry head of curls, you’ll end up with a frizzy mess. Use a wide tooth comb your daughter’s curly hair only when it is soaking wet after a bath to protect the curl pattern and prevent unruly hair. If your girl has straighter hair, however, dry brushing may be fine. Just make sure to use a nice, gentle detangler, and a quality brush that will be fun. 4. Be creative with your styling gear
Even when you do everything else right, relying on the wrong styling accessories can undo the perfect hairdo. If her unruly hair is short, springy and wild, try taming it with a headband. The blue, pink, and purple options in our Disney Princess Headband Set can work wonders on big poofs. If her hair is long, pull it back into a cute low pony, then braid and set with a pretty hair elastic. Pin any flyaways down with cute clips. Our Elena Hair and Beauty Set comes complete with a variety of cute bow clips, as well as several sparkly hair elastic bands so your girl can look stylish and sleek.
