How the first toy automobile was invented:
About 10 years after Little Tikes was founded in Hudson, Ohio, the company introduced the the Coupe, the world’s first ride-on drivable toy automobile to the market in 1979. Soon, almost every household had the familiar red and yellow Cozy Coupe parked in the garage right next to mom and dad’s chosen rides.
In 1998, the New York Times named the Coupe “the world’s best-selling car” in the market, reporting that it outsold the Honda Accord and the Ford Taurus!
By the time the Cozy Coupe celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004, it had reached $6 million in sales. Even though it’s faced some tough competition over the past 20 years for so, by the time the Cozy Coupe reaches its 40 year anniversary next year, it will likely still be the world’s most driven car.
Since Little Tikes kicked off the Coup in the low-key 1970s, they’ve stepped up their game to reflect new market demands. More recent styles include a magical unicorn carriage, a princess horse & carriage, a lavender fairy theme with painted wings, a purple truck with snow tires and even a battery operated ride-on tractor! None of these, however, has outsold the classic Coup style. But that won’t stop us from revving up plenty of new products with Little Tikes soon!
